Outdoor Workout Program
APR to OCT 6 PM Tues & Thurs 90 minute class
Pt. Richmond hills and parks
NOV to MAR 6 PM Tues & Thurs in the Studio - Full Body Workout
JAN to DEC 6:30 AM Saturday workout on Mt. Tamalpais
Workout format in Mother Nature's outdoor exercise studio:
Local Park Areas
The parks are a great location for Restorative Exercise workouts, similar to the studio with added movement, walking in proper alignment, and for developing upper body strength and shoulder stabilization using hanging bars and resistance bands. The large flat areas are a great place for core work, improving our flexibility and working with balance. The rolling hills are a great location for walking and light jogging on soft trails, developing strength with full body movements perfect planks, push ups for arm and abdominal strength, one-leg stands, core work and a few other adventures now and then. The tall dense eucalyptus and meandering shoreline are our refuge from the hot summer sun.
Pt. Richmond Hills
The hills around the Point offer us vertical movement to practice optimal use of the feet, legs, pelvis and core when moving up and down steep terrain. This is great preparation for any outdoor experience. Take in the million-dollar views while you improve your hip lists, monster walk, one leg stand and feel those core muscles engaging as you hold a plank as the sun turns the dusk sky deep shades of pink, purple and blue.
Mt. Tamalpais - Saturday 2-Hour De-Stress
If you think standing on a remote Marin hilltop above the clouds looking down at the entrance to the San Francisco Bay as the sun RISES in the East sounds like heaven then this is the exercise program for you. Most Saturdays at about 7AM we meet at a different starting point on Mt. Tamalpais and other amazing locations. The workout covers 3 to 5 miles of magnificent trails with breathing views that unwind stress, calm the spirit and enliven the heart. We stop occasionally to do full-body exercises using our back, chest, shoulders and arms did I mention abdominals? We love our abs! The adventure ends around 9 AM and we are off the mountain before the bikes and runners swarm the trails. It is early - but it is sooo worth it!
The primary difference between this workout and the 6PM Outdoor Class is the 2-hour duration and the distance we cover and, Mt. Tamalpais is an ever changing venue with countless points of interest.
Prerequisite: Participants in the Mt.Tamalpais Saturday class must attend at least four sessions of the 6pm Outdoor Workout the first month. Thereafter you may attend Saturday only with permission of the instructor, Nancy Burns.

It's time to focus some serious energy on the area between your ribs and your hips. This class will address your entire trunk - from the lowest belly muscles to the mysterious part of your body that lives just under your armpits. This anatomy is responsible for holding you up when you walk, stabilizing your internal organs, and regulating blood flow to your hips.
- Is your belly bigger than your hips?
- Do you have chronic lower back aches?
- Have you increased your pant size since your 30s?
- Do you want to be stronger, trimmer, and more flexible in your hip and spine area?
This class is for you!!!
SEASONAL CLASSES
BOSU Strong Body Restorative Exercise September 2020
Proprioception: This is another fancy word describing how your body responds to external forces to keep your joints in the right position. When you stand on a Balance Trainer, all of your muscles are forced to contract to keep your joints in proper position. This helps make normal activities easier.
The best thing about the Balance Trainer, besides its versatility, is that it adds fun to your usual workouts. It makes workouts challenging and interesting.
What Is It?
The BOSU Balance Trainer is one of the more exciting exercise tools to hit the fitness world in a while. Why? Because you can use it for so many different activities, all while working on endurance, strength, balance, and stability. The Balance Trainer is like an exercise ball that's been cut in half with a platform on the bottom. The squishy dome side on top and flat platform on the bottom allow you to use the Balance Trainer in many unique ways to build strength in upper body, lower body and core, correct alignment in knees and hips, dramatically improve your balance and much more . The possibilities are endless.
What It Does
Doing exercises on the Balance Trainer requires you to maintain your center of gravity over a surface that is constantly changing. Just standing on it is challenging, as your body moves and shifts into and out of balance.
Using the BOSU Balance Trainer can help improve:
Balance: Because the Balance Trainer is never stable, you're constantly engaging the small stabilizer muscles in the upper and lower body to keep you in place.
Kinesthetic awareness: This is just a fancy word for your awareness of how the body is positioned at any given moment. This awareness is something that often declines as we age, so the Balance Trainer can help you stay connected with how your body moves.
Walk in the Park - Restorative Exercise
Walking for wellness, weight loss and strong bones. September 2010
Is there a hitch in your giddy-up?
Is your head getting to your destination faster then your feet?
Do you avoid walking hills because it causes knee or hip pain?
Walk, walk, walk but no change in your pant size?
It is time for a change!
Walking as full-body movement is one of the safest and most beneficial forms of exercise. This class teaches you the components of walking for health and fitness.
- engage your powerful posterior muscles that propel you forward
- decrease negative forces that damage knee, hip and ankle joints
- use engaged walking to improve breathing and general health
- decrease the risk of injury and promote lifelong mobility
- maximize calorie burn by raising your BMR
You'll walk at your own pace, learn basic exercises to improve the alignment, strength and flexibility of lower body muscles and joints. Then we'll take those skills outside and practice walking around the beautiful Brickyard Cove Marina and the local parks. Please wear walking shoes.
Strong Women - Restorative Exercise - Level 2 Fall
Using bio-mechanically correct exercise (strength training, yoga, calisthenics, and FUN!), this course will get you ready to SPRING into SUMMER.
Everyone can work at their own level, but every body should be prepared for WORK! Course content will begin with the basics of shoulder girdle and abdominal alignment and progress to more advanced, full-body upper body and core conditioning exercise.
This class focuses heavily on upper body strength. Poor upper body strength may seem trivial, but weakness in this area can contribute to poor lymph drainage in the underarm, chronic neck pain, shoulder injury, and the ever-detrimental "wobbling arm".
Warm Up - Please arrive early and walk 1 to 2 miles to warm-up your muscles before the class begins.

Workshop - Introduction to Pilates
In this introductory class you will learn the basic movements and body concepts that constitute Pilates exercise. Pilates is a method of body conditioning that works to strengthen your center, lengthen your spine, build muscle tone, and increase body awareness and flexibility. Relief of joint pain including many forms of low back pain often results from this Pilates core training. The system of floor exercises designed by Joseph Pilates is progressive: from fundamentals to the beginning mat series, the intermediate mat series and finally the advanced series.
